Elementary School (Grades 2-6)
The broad mission of The Kildonan School is to empower students with dyslexia to reach their academic potential and to equip them for future success. Our students often come to us from educational experiences where they struggled to find success because that environment did not recognize their potential and/or know how to meet their needs. When they first come to us, many of our students are wary of challenging tasks. Often, their motivation is diminished. They must relearn that with effort and guidance they can successfully engage in academic activities. Our practice as educators, and how that practice reaches our students, is one of the most significant factors in helping our students reset the direct connection between effort and positive results.
Elementary Academics:
Our goal is to unlock the power of each student's dyslexic brain. The one-to-one tutorial is designed to meet every student's unique needs and abilities in a safe and private setting. Classes in literature, math, history, science, and the arts stimulate and challenge students to think independently and creatively, to use all their senses to observe and evaluate, and to collaborate effectively to solve problems. Technology provides our students with tools to access information independently and share it regardless of their decoding and encoding skills. Our rural setting and equestrian program create a balance between academic demands and healthy outdoor activity. Students, teachers, and families work together to sustain our vibrant, supportive community.
