Assistive Technology

The rapid development of technology has proven to be a great asset to dyslexic students.  Current computer operating systems and software help them read, write, organize ideas, and synthesize information in ways that may have been impossible for them in the past.  Both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems have built-in tools to assist users with learning disabilities.  In addition, software such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, MacSpeech Dictate, Kurzweil 3000, Inspiration, and Microsoft Word have made the demands of language-based activities much easier for them.

The Kildonan School operates a dual-platform assistive technology lab in its Upper School.  Students in the program choose to work on a Windows or MacIntosh computer, based on past experience and preference.  Upon entering the program, the students complete a comprehensive half-year assistive technology class, in which they learn the functions of the software and how to apply the programs to their subject matter work.  After completing the class, they are welcome to use the lab during open hours but are expected to take responsibility for their use of the technology.

A quote from Assistive Technology Coordinator Jamie Martin about the future of the Assistive Tech program: "I am very enthusiastic about the inevitable expansion of the AT program. After doing some initial research, I have discovered that Kildonan is among only a few secondary schools that are serving students with language difficulties by having assistive technology as part of the academic program, and Kildonan is the only school that has a single, comprehensive course dedicated solely to the teaching of assistive technology."
