Our program serves the needs of children who have specific deficits in language but many different strengths. Many have been denied academic success, have lost confidence in themselves, and have felt isolated from their peers. At Kildonan's Elementary School, our goal is to address their specific deficits, capitalize on their strengths, provide the setting for academic success, and foster self-esteem through both individual and collaborative activities. The daily schedule includes individual tutoring, academic classes, art, music, sports and instructional riding, and community and small group time. Throughout the year, we find opportunities for special events, trips, and celebrations. The structured routines and patterns of the day, week, and seasons provide the security that permits greater freedom for the mind.
The most important group to which all members of the elementary school belong is the Community of students and teachers who gather every morning for a meeting and music. The school day begins at 8 a.m. with a community meeting at which announcements may be made or questions raised by any member of the community. Major issues within the school or wider community may be mentioned although extensive discussion of those topics is usually reserved for class or homeroom periods. Each day a brief amount of time is devoted to learning new songs or practicing songs for a future presentation. Such activities contribute to a sense of belonging, give each member a voice, and focus the attention of the student body for the day ahead.
