Our Program

Upper School (Grades 7-12)

Literature

The central goal of the Kildonan Literature Department is to expose the students to as much allusive material as possible in order for them to compete fairly in the next academic environment. Additionally, the department takes on the task of developing students’ appreciation of literature and the written word. In most course offerings, the texts are presented orally; advanced courses ask students to complete independent reading outside of class and write papers of more length and substance. In both general and advanced courses, the teacher provides as much multi-sensory support as possible.

Because Kildonan is unique in providing one-on-one language training to each student, literature classes do not stress spelling, grammar, or other mechanics that normally find a place in English curricula. Therefore, literature classes at Kildonan stress the introduction and eventual mastery of literary terms, the development of critical thinking, speaking, and writing skills, and a structured approach to literary analysis. Because of the structured nature of the program and the in-depth presentation of texts, students finish a successful year in literature with detailed knowledge of the works presented.

Each fall, the entire eighth and tenth grade students travel to Medieval Times in New Jersey to supplement their studies.

Students Talk about Their Experiences at Kildonan

Chiefly, Kildonan bettered my outlook on life. Once here, I matured in many respects and literally had my eyes opened to the true workings of the world. To help me along in my quest for self-enlightenment were the kindest and most patient teachers, or people for that matter, who I will ever meet.
