Attendance Policy

Policy Explanation

All students are expected to be in attendance from 8:00 am to 4:55 pm every day that school is in session. There are no "optional" days in the Kildonan calendar. Given Kildonan's lengthy vacations and long summer break, every class day is invaluable. The school asks families to schedule family trips and vacations during the breaks in the Kildonan calendar. Any family vacation time taken when school is in session will be marked as an unexcused absence.

Excused Absences

When a student will be absent from school, parents are required to call the Main Office at 845-373-8111, prompt #1, by 8 a.m. that morning, or email mainoffice@kildonan.org. Any student not otherwise accounted for will be marked as an unexcused absence, which holds disciplinary consequences. Students are accountable for all work assigned during an absence.

Below is a list of excused absences. Please refer to the Kildonan School Parent/Student Handbook for a more detailed explanation of these categories of excused absences.

  • Medical leave (extended illness or injury)
  • Sick (minor, short-term illnesses)
  • Separation from school (disciplinary reasons)
  • Weather disruptions (primarily day students)
  • College visits
  • Bereavement
  • Religious holiday
  • School-sponsored field trip
  • Health office
  • Medical appointment off campus

If a student is absent more than 2 days due to illness, a doctor's note is required. If a note is not provided, the absence is considered unexcused. In that event, the Office of Student Life will contact the parents to discuss reasons for the absence.

Unexcused Absence

Any student who is absent from school without parent notification/documentation, or who is absent from any class without notification from the nurse or other school personnel, will be considered cutting class. This will trigger a disciplinary consultation with the Associate Headmaster, Office of Student Life, the advisor, student and parents. The first unexcused absence results in a one-day suspension. Second and subsequent unexcused absences will automatically carry disciplinary consequences and remain part of the student's permanent academic record, which includes quarterly reports and transcripts.

Late Arrival

Students must report to the Main Office in the Diana H. King Schoolhouse to sign in and receive a pass admitting them to class. No student arriving late to school will be admitted to class without a pass.

Early Departure

Kildonan takes the position that the most important job of the student is to be in class, and that any absence from class detracts from student success. No student will be granted permission to depart campus early without signed permission from the Associate Headmaster. Parents are required to contact the Associate Headmaster directly prior to any early departure. Students who leave campus without securing written permission will be marked as cutting class, and will be subject to disciplinary action.

Disciplinary Action

If a student accrues more than 10 excused daily absences per semester, 5 unexcused daily absences, or 10 unexcused absences from class, a meeting with be convened with the Associate Headmaster, Office of Student Life, advisor, teachers and parents to discuss the academic status of the student.

Attendance is taken in every class 5 minutes after class starts. Students who are late will be recorded. Beginning with the second late arrival, the student will be required to serve a 20-minute detention for each late arrival in class.
